Young New Yorkers Hosts Second Annual Silent Art Auction
Arts-Based Restorative Justice Program Invites All to Enjoy a Night of Art and Music to Raise Funds to Ensure Its Continued Success
Brooklyn, N.Y., Oct. 10, 2013 – Young New Yorkers (“YNY”), an arts-based restorative justice program for 16- and 17-year-olds with open criminal cases, is hosting its second annual Silent Art Auction on Wed. October 16, 2013, 6 - 10pm, at Allegra La Viola Gallery (179 East Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10002). There will be a press preview hour from 5 - 6pm before the event. The auction will feature works from renowned visual artists such as Shepard Fairey (creator of the Barack Obama “Hope” poster), Swoon, Stephen ESPO Powers, Anthony Lister, Steven Holl, and many more. Cosmo Baker, legendary New York DJ, will entertain the crowd with a live set. Tickets cost $35 in advance, $40 at the door, and include food, drinks, and an unforgettable evening of art and fun.
Last year’s inaugural Silent Art Auction funded YNY’s pilot program. The program offers 16- and 17-year-old teenagers, who are charged as adults under New York law, a positive alternative to incarceration. Successful graduates of the program not only learn restraint, empathy, and compassion, but also often have their charges dismissed and sealed. This allows these young teens to live an adult life unencumbered by a criminal record. 100% of the initial participants graduated, underscoring the program’s efficacy.
Daniel, a participant and graduate of YNY, summed up the program’s benefits by noting that the YNY volunteers “believed in us while others simply judged us,” and that he learned “to take responsibility for my actions and that you hold your future in your hands.”
