Every week until September 1st, a different artist or group takes over the SUZANNEGEISS.NET. The bunch of innovative, emerging multimedia artists includes AH HOLE AH HOLE, Joshua Citarella, Mariah Dekkenga, Owen Kydd, Petrella’s Imports, PplSft, Emily Segal, and Analisa Bien Teachworth. So yes, you can view the show in the comfort of your own office chair. Now isn't that cool?

Okay, I lie. You could still go to the gallery, mostly for the real-life installation topping off the digital project––a piece created by Soho's favorite newsstand, PETRELLA’S IMPORTS. I asked the curator Emily Ludwig Shaffer a few questions about the groundbreaking digital-meets-IRL series.

The Suzanne Geiss Company is pleased to present suzannegeiss.net, a temporary digital platform for emerging artists to utilize the url as a medium in the gallery context. Each week from July 1st to September 1st, a different artist or group will take over this domain. The content and purpose of suzannegeiss.net will be dictated by the artists during their allotted time, the gallery having no say in what appears on the site.

As an extension of suzannegeiss.net, Petrella’s Imports, one of the website’s contributors, will take over the gallery’s storefront space from July 30th to August 24th. For their online project, Petrella's will create a newsstand app almost identical to the app standard on digital devices. Instead of The New York Times, USA Today, or other ubiquitous publications, their app will feature digital artist projects. In the gallery, they will create a site-specific manifestation of the app involving take-away versions of the artist publications, continuing the group’s interest in physical versus digital outposts for contemporary art.

suzannegeiss.net takes a look at the changing relationship between artists and galleries and the mediums in which they function. Contributors include AH HOLE AH HOLE, Joshua Citarella, Mariah Dekkenga, Owen Kydd, Petrella’s Imports, PplSft, Edward Marshall Shenk, Emily Segal, and Analisa Bien Teachworth.

We welcome you to regularly stop by suzannegeiss.net to see how the site changes with each contributor, as well as our gallery storefront during Petrella’s Imports’ installation.

'Petrella's Imports' was created by Anne Libby, Elise McMahon and Sophie Stone at the intersection of Bowery and Canal. At a time when the role of the newsstand as 'source of information' wanes, Petrella's Imports' newsstand acted as a physical outpost in a digital age, housing a surrogate inventory assembled from artist-made items including magazines and newspapers, postcards, prepackaged food, umbrellas and cigarettes. Their serial video project "Live Stream" documents and fictionalizes the newsstand's reified integration into New York City street life, suggesting an alternative to both art consumption and commercial culture.

Petrella's Imports

Located between Bowery and Canal st, Petrella’s Imports (2013) is conceived as a hybrid reconstitution at a time when the originary purpose of the newsstand as ‘source of information’ diminishes. Petrella’s Imports aims to both re-imagine the offerings of these nodes of distribution and apply a different solution to their serviceability.

Artists Anne Libby, Elise McMahon, and Sophie Stone works with a large number of creative collaborators in order to assemble a surrogate inventory of items (magazines and newspapers as well as postcards, prepackaged food, umbrellas, and cigarettes) found typically at commercial newsstands.

In the last ten years the New York City newsstand has experienced a massive transformation, undertaken with relative ease. The move extends from a municipal belief that older newsstands cluttered the city streets and were incongruous with a tourist culture in need of reinvigoration. The contemporary solution is a more uniform glass and steel construction built by a single contractor, in a single style. It has now gradually replaced those operated by sole proprietors, whose unique stands often reflected a heightened level of individual taste and character.

One of New York City's oldest and most celebrated newsstands was known as "Petrella's Point". It was located at the intersection of Bowery and Canal. Owned and operated by Adam Petrella, for 30 years, its brash red exterior coating and hand painted directions to nearby subways and neighborhoods were well known to those familiar with the area. As a personality, Mr Petrella was a neighborhood fixture, conversing with patrons and often handing out his own drawings of Marilyn Monroe and Bruce Lee to passersby. In 2004, "Petrella's Point" was removed and replaced by a stand of the newer design.
