Splonk is a show about the cartoon. The work ranges from the flat and abstract to the more lyrical and uncanny. All of the work engages with the sensibility of the cartoon; abbreviated and elegant depictions that are both familiar and unfamiliar. The artists in the show make work that is visually inviting, but also disrupts, in some way, what we think we know about space, form, color, line, object. There are connections to Japanese woodblock prints, Picasso, animation, and graphic novels to name a few. Filtered through a contemporary lens, the pieces are less grounded, stranger and maybe tinged with a new millennium anxiety. Enjoy!

Big Sky Mind features recent works by Holly Coulis, Elisa Soliven and Mitchell Wright. Each of these artists approach a traditional genre – classical busts, painterly landscapes and intuitive drawings - in an overwhelmingly physical way. Though divergent in production and methodology, their works are as tactile as they are cerebral, abstractly and literally layered. Separately, these works exude personal visions of the most general notions: body, self, and environment. The group, though, is specifically aligned to embrace the multiple contexts that particular objects inhabit and to exploit these viewpoints as spaces for contemplation. big. sky. mind.

FRESH PAINT FROM BUSHWICK

"Fresh Paint from Bushwick," Curated by Deborah Brown

Opening Thursday, August 11th, 6:00--8:00 p.m.

StandPipe Gallery, 150 W. 25^th St., Manhattan, presents Fresh Paint from Bushwick, a group show of new work by emerging painters centered in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. Organized by artist-curator, Deborah Brown, co-director of Bushwick’s STOREFRONT gallery, Fresh Paint will feature work by seven Bushwick painters: Gina Beavers, Holly Coulis, Halsey Hathaway, Rachel LaBine, Kerry Law, Adam Simon, and Josette Urso.

StandPipe Gallery is located at 150 W. 25^th Street, Manhattan, just east of Seventh Avenue.

Fresh Paint from Bushwick will run from Friday, August 12, through Friday, September 2. An opening reception will be held Thursday, August 11, from 6:00-8:00PM. The gallery’s summer hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11:00AM – 5:00PM.
