Elastic de facto // Opening Saturday, July 20

Stage One:

Picture Menu arrives in Los Angeles by airplane. The next day, they install the work of the other four artists. Once the work is installed, it is documented. The next day, the show opens. This is the exhibition.

Stage Two (through Twenty-One):

Michael and Keith fly back to New York, while Rachel remains in Los Angeles. Rachel begins modifying the initial installation of works while documenting these changes. She chooses certain images that become often temporarily and sometimes permanently additional or substitute works. She sends these photos to the Picture Menu e-mail account. Keith and Michael write varied responses to each of the photos and post these in a loosely narrative sequence on the Picture Menu website. This is the exhibition.

Questions for an evolutionary exhibition:

How is an artist present in a work?
How is an artist absent in a work?
Can an idea be a performance in itself?
Can a message perform for a person?
Can a performance ever be properly documented?
